Can You Find the Hidden Face in Under 10 Seconds?

At first glance, it may look like nothing more than a tree.

Branches.
Shadows.
Twisted bark.

But then suddenly, almost without warning, a face appears.

And once you see it, you cannot unsee it.

That moment matters more than people realize.

Because optical illusions are not simply games.
They are small demonstrations of how the human brain works.

What we notice first is shaped by experience.
By emotion.
By expectation.
By habit.
And sometimes even by stress.

Two people can look at the exact same image and see entirely different things.

One person immediately spots the hidden face.
Another sees only trees.
Another notices the landscape first.
Another becomes frustrated and gives up quickly.

The brain is not merely recording reality.
It is interpreting it.

And that interpretation is deeply connected to psychological flexibility.

That is why exercises like this are far more meaningful than they initially appear.

They gently challenge the brain to remain curious.
Alert.
Adaptable.

In many ways, cognitive flexibility is one of the quiet foundations of healthy aging.

Not perfection.
Not speed.
Not genius.

Flexibility.

The willingness of the mind to keep searching for another perspective.

For years, many people have been taught to think about aging primarily in terms of decline.

Memory loss.
Slowing down.
Limitations.

But modern psychology and neuroscience increasingly suggest something more hopeful.

The brain remains remarkably capable of adaptation throughout life.

Neural pathways continue developing.
New connections can still form.
Attention can still sharpen.
Curiosity can still expand the mind.

In fact, many older adults develop strengths that younger people often lack:

  • improved pattern recognition
  • emotional insight
  • better judgment
  • deeper intuition
  • greater tolerance for complexity

The aging brain is not simply losing abilities.
In many cases, it is reorganizing them.

That distinction matters.

Because the way people think about aging often shapes how they experience it.

If individuals begin seeing themselves as mentally “finished,” they often stop challenging themselves.
They stop learning.
Stop exploring.
Stop engaging.

And slowly, the world becomes psychologically smaller.

But the mind thrives on stimulation.

Not frantic overstimulation.
Not endless scrolling.
Not noise.

Meaningful engagement.

Puzzles.
Conversation.
Reading.
Reflection.
Learning.
Creativity.
Novelty.

Even something as simple as searching for a hidden face in an image encourages the brain to scan differently.
To reconsider.
To stay mentally active.

That process is valuable at every age.

There is also something psychologically revealing about optical illusions themselves.

They remind us that perception is rarely absolute.

Human beings often assume that the way they see the world is the way the world truly is.

But perception is filtered through:

  • memory
  • personality
  • emotional history
  • fear
  • hope
  • past experiences

Sometimes we miss what is directly in front of us because our minds are trained to look elsewhere.

That is true in relationships.
In families.
In aging.
In identity.

Many people spend decades focused entirely on responsibility and survival.
Then later in life, they suddenly begin noticing parts of themselves that had long been hidden beneath obligation.

A quieter desire.
A creative side.
A longing for peace.
A need for boundaries.
A wish to finally become more fully themselves.

In that sense, perhaps the hidden face in the image is symbolic too.

Sometimes life asks us to look again.

A nimble brain is not necessarily the fastest brain.

It is the brain willing to remain open.

Open to new information.
Open to reconsidering old assumptions.
Open to learning.
Open to growth.

That kind of mental flexibility often becomes one of the greatest emotional assets of later life.

And contrary to cultural stereotypes, many people become psychologically wiser with age, not less relevant.

They become less reactive.
Less performative.
Less consumed with proving.

But often more observant.
More reflective.
More emotionally accurate.

The goal is not simply to stay busy.

The goal is to stay engaged with life.

To continue noticing.
Questioning.
Exploring.
Thinking.

To remain mentally alive.

Because growing older should never require shrinking intellectually, emotionally, or psychologically.

So…
did you find the hidden face in under 10 seconds?

More importantly:

What else might your mind be capable of seeing when it stays curious?

Many people grow up believing reinvention belongs to the young.

We associate new beginnings with college years, career shifts in midlife, or dramatic moments of youthful ambition. By the time people reach their seventies, society often assumes the important chapters have already been written.

But life does not stop asking us to grow simply because we grow older.

In fact, many people discover that reinvention becomes more emotionally honest after 70 than it ever was earlier in life.

Not because everything suddenly becomes easier.

Because clarity begins replacing performance.

By this stage of life, many people have spent decades fulfilling responsibilities, raising families, surviving difficult seasons, caring for others, building careers, maintaining relationships, and adapting to expectations. Somewhere along the way, personal desires often become secondary to obligations.

Then something changes.

The pace of life slows enough for deeper questions to emerge.

Who am I now?

What still brings me alive?

What parts of myself did I neglect while trying to survive or succeed?

These questions are not signs of crisis.

They are signs of awakening.

Reinvention After 70 Is Different

Reinvention later in life rarely looks flashy from the outside.

It is often quieter than people expect.

Sometimes it means returning to forgotten passions. Sometimes it means releasing relationships that no longer feel healthy. Sometimes it means learning how to rest without guilt for the first time in decades.

For others, reinvention means discovering entirely new parts of themselves.

People start painting.
Traveling.
Writing.
Volunteering.
Learning instruments.
Building friendships.
Starting businesses.
Returning to spirituality.
Speaking more honestly.
Living more intentionally.

The important shift is not external achievement.

It is internal permission.

Many older adults begin realizing they no longer want to spend their remaining years performing versions of themselves that feel emotionally exhausting.

That realization can feel both liberating and frightening.

Because reinvention often requires grieving the identity you spent years maintaining.

Why Reinvention Feels Emotional After 70

There is a misconception that aging naturally brings peace and certainty.

Sometimes it does.

But aging can also bring emotional disorientation.

Retirement changes identity.
Children grow independent.
Social circles shrink.
Bodies change.
Loss becomes more familiar.
Time feels more visible.

For many people, these changes create an uncomfortable question:

Now what?

That question can feel frightening when life has long been structured around responsibility or routine.

But it can also become an opportunity.

Many people reach their seventies carrying dreams they quietly postponed for decades. Others realize they have spent much of life seeking approval instead of authenticity.

Healthy aging is not simply about maintaining physical health.

It is also about remaining emotionally alive.

And emotional aliveness often requires change.

You Are Allowed to Become Someone New

One of the most freeing realizations later in life is understanding that identity is not fixed.

You are still allowed to evolve.

Still allowed to learn.
Still allowed to heal.
Still allowed to surprise yourself.

Some people discover more confidence after 70 than they ever had at 40.

Why?

Because they stop measuring themselves through the approval of others.

There is less pressure to impress.
Less pressure to compete.
Less pressure to prove worth through productivity alone.

Many people finally begin asking:
What actually feels meaningful to me now?

That question can change everything.

Reinvention Is Often About Returning to Yourself

People often imagine reinvention as becoming someone entirely different.

But later-life reinvention is frequently about becoming more authentic rather than more impressive.

It is about reconnecting with the parts of yourself that existed before fear, obligation, or social expectation took over.

For some, that means creativity.
For others, honesty.
For others, peace.

The goal is not perfection.

The goal is alignment.

That alignment can change the quality of later life dramatically.

The Freedom of Starting Again

There is something powerful about realizing life is not over simply because you are older.

In many ways, later life can become emotionally richer because people finally stop living entirely for appearances.

There is freedom in caring less about external validation.
Freedom in slowing down.
Freedom in choosing relationships more carefully.
Freedom in becoming more emotionally truthful.

Reinvention after 70 is not about pretending to be young again.

It is about becoming fully present in the life you still have.

And that may be one of the most meaningful transformations of all.

These themes of emotional resilience, authenticity, and aging with purpose are explored more deeply in 77 and Still Standing: A Psychologist’s Guide to Aging Without Shrinking by Dr. Karen Turner.

You can learn more here in my book:

FAQ

Is it possible to reinvent yourself after 70?

Yes. Reinvention after 70 often involves emotional growth, purpose, creativity, relationships, and living more authentically.

Why do many people feel lost after retirement?

Retirement can remove routines, identities, and social structures that shaped daily life for decades.

What are healthy ways to reinvent yourself later in life?

Healthy reinvention can include hobbies, volunteering, travel, creativity, emotional healing, spirituality, and building meaningful relationships.

Dreams are one of the very important psychological issues; as many psychological articles tell us a dream is more than just a random compilation of the unconscious mind. In fact, psychological theorists believe that a dream actually gives us a window of insight into what the unconscious mind is really thinking and believing. Originating with Sigmund Freud, the theorists represented in these psychological articles posit that dreams are a tool to uncovering things that we have repressed or kept hidden from our waking consciousness, and thus these thoughts and feelings become conveyed to us as “alarm signals” through our nighttime reveries. In other words, to these theorists, all dreams represent something of subjective psychological importance; and oftentimes this emotional material is objectionable to the person’s conscious waking ego.

Freud’s dream theories are representative of the psychological (i.e., non random) approach to dream interpretation; as he believed that dreams are the doorway to understanding the unconscious mind. He believed the psyche had three parts: the id, the ego, and the superego. It is a bit of a complicated theory, but basically, Freud believed that dreams occur because of the ego defense theory, which is the waking ego, our conscious minds, defending our more vulnerable subconscious minds from allowing in material the conscious ego would find unpleasant and objectionable. Therefore, if the conscious mind isn’t willing to deal with conflicted or difficult waking issues, the unconscious dreaming mind will push through the conscious ego’s defenses and present the material as dream imagery.

We all need to sleep! This is certainly a well known fact. Lack of sufficient sleep is harmful to both our minds and bodies. However, lots of differing psychological articles have different opinions on the role of dreaming. For Freud, when we sleep the ego part of our mind relaxes and, therefore, the unconscious mind is able to sort of influence our conscious mind. However, he says that if this actually happened it would wake us up, so our mind had to develop a defense against awakening. He explains that the ego begins to do what he called dream work, in which the ego can disguise thought of the unconscious nature by using symbols. In his theory, the symbols do not disturb our sleep and, thus, a dream develops.

Now what does all this mean, you ask? Well, basically, it means that there are two distinct levels of dreams. There is the manifest content, which Freud says is what you remember after you awake or the part that is remembered after the ego disguised it. And then there is the latent content, the true meaning of the dream. To go a step further, Freud thought that the symbolism in dreams were of two types: personal symbolism and universal symbolism. Personal symbolism contains symbols that are relevant to the dreamer while universal symbolism contains symbols that are universally recognized as having the same meanings, (i.e., similar to Jung’s concept of archetypes we discussed in http://boomeryearbook.com/blog/2009/03/04/dream-interpretation-using-title-or-one-line-summary/

What do you think? Do you believe there is any truth behind Freud’s ego defense theory? Or do you believe that each dream is unique to each individual and that there is no such thing as a universal symbol? You will find that the debate rages on. You can generalize a universal symbol as to the possibilities of what they generally represent, but you cannot say for certain that it means the exact same thing to every dreamer.

Life as a boomer with elderly problems can sometimes become quite dull and boring. To get a break from the of monotony, try spending a fun evening with friends playing board games. However, finding a game that is entertaining for people aged 50 and above can be quite a challenge. While carrying out a research trying to find fun ways for baby boomers with elderly problems to spend their weekends, Boomer Yearbook’s research team found our about “Pass Out”. Warning! Don’t Drink and Drive while playing this game.

Usually four people play “Pass-Out” – an adult-drinking game perfect for baby boomers looking for a little fun; or the number of people can exceed four if you want to include another person in the game. It is somewhat similar to Monopoly only alcohol is taken instead of buying property.

Rules of the game

The way “Pass-Out” alleviates the elderly problem of boredom is by all players beginning on the same square, as in Monopoly, then the red counter person makes the first move and rolls two dice. Then in a clockwise direction he or she moves the count of squares. Whatever is indicated on the square has to be done by the player. Then turn by turn each player will follow the directions on the squares they land on.

Instead of a “Monopoly’s” Go to Jail square the Pass-Out game gives a boot to elderly problems by spicing it up with “Go to the Bar” square. If a person lands here, he must go to the bar instantly and if the person passes the start square a pink elephant card does not have to be picked. But in a case where the person picks a Pass- Out card that directs him to Go to a Bar then he has to pick up a pink elephant card. There are three ways to get out of the bar.

by keeping a Get out of Bar card
by rolling 7 or 11 on the dice
just taking a sip of a watered down drink

Since you are not relieved of drinking while you are in the jail; baby boomers with the elderly problem of alcohol abuse should not play this game as a drink has to be taken whenever somebody lands on the square of your color.

The Start square of “Pass Out” works like the “Go” square of “Monopoly”, the difference is getting a Pink elephant card in place of 200 points.

And All must take three drinks square in Pass Out has replaced the free parking card on “Monopoly”.

The rest of the squares are colors. You take a drink is represented by orange, yellow means that the one who has a yellow counter should take a drink and the same goes for blue, green and yellow squares. However, landing on a white square indicates that the person must follow the instructions on a “Pass Out” card. Pink square directs everyone to have a drink.

Two sets of cards

There are two sets of cards:

Pink elephant cards – contain interesting tongue twisters which everyone takes turns saying.
Pass-Out cards – are tricky like chance cards which can land one into trouble or be favorable.

Other rules for this game are related to lighting up. Lighting up can be declined by a player. On lighting up without a relevant card they have to down five drinks. Again, we need to warn that those with the elderly problems of alcohol abuse should not be playing this game.

Drinks

Players are free to drink more or less from the whole glass. It is fine in this game for someone with any elderly problem where large amounts of drinking are contraindicated to take just the tiniest sip of the drink and even spit it out if they want, such as in wine tasting. There is never any rule that says to take the whole drink.

Conclusion

The game can go on for two hours. It is a fun-for-all drinking game or as we said can be a wine sipping game, but only for those baby boomers that don’t have elderly problems that prohibit them from drinking, and NO ONE SHOULD EVER DRINK and DRIVE. However, under the right, safe circumstances, playing games like Pass Out with friends is also a fantastic way of beating elderly problems of boredom. It’s kind of like a “strip poker” for adults, definitely spicing up a get together.

The popular belief is that men age so much more attractively than women and this, at times, is true. Women with elderly problems tend to go through middle age and the booming senior years vainly trying to turn back the clock; ironing out wrinkles with the help of endless beauty preparations and potions, looking for a miracle cure for Father Time. Men, on the other hand, annoyingly sport wrinkles the size of the Grand Canyon and look colorfully attractive; interesting; ‘lived in’.

Age lends a certain personality to good looks. Yet, time can play some cruel tricks and women who were drop dead gorgeous in youth may suddenly have a complexion like old cheese and develop bandy, or loose skinned legs. Men too can have age related physical losses including sagging pectorals, balding heads and sprouting an alarming crop of hair in the most unattractive and un-sexy places. All the physical developments that occur with age present us with new challenges to overcome both socially and in the bedroom.

At the precise moment when we find we have enough time on our hands to spend a few hours in bed in the afternoon with the object of our desire, erectile dysfunction can hit like a thunderclap and ruin the fun for both parties. The awkwardness that suddenly rears its ugly head between two people who until then enjoyed a completely uninhibited sex life without elderly problems can destroy all the passion and delight they have in each other.

For women who have spent a long career helping their man to build up a decent retirement fund and making a valuable contribution to his financial and emotional health, problems in the bedroom can be the last straw and make her unsympathetic in the extreme. Elderly problems of this kind are just the sort of glitch that can send a self respecting, intelligent and sexually healthy woman into the arms of someone quite unsuitable.

Women experiencing elderly problems with their partner that affect their sex lives should consider whether they are being entirely helpful. Any kind of behavior that displays a less than supportive attitude will render a sexual partner completely unable to overcome a problem and set recovery back weeks or months as they try to hide their inability to produce an erection. The next stage is that they will find any excuse not to have sex and from there the downward spiral continues, resulting in impotence and misery; all for the lack of a little gentle patience.

Yes, men are aggravatingly unable to cope with their male pride. Yes, they are generally over opinionated and critical of women’s sexual performance, yet display a complete shutdown when confronted with their own sexual limitations. Men are sensitive; far more so than women. If your man requires some sexual help, have the intelligence to get some advice and do whatever you have to do to help him overcome his difficulties. Find new ways to have sex that do not require erectile function and be patient.

Toxic work situations cover an enormous range of difficulties. Baby boomers are practiced at dealing with cranky people and sticky problems – they have been around a long time and have a lot of experience to fall back on!

The bigger the corporation the more likelihood there will be of finding toxic issues causing a problem and making people miserable. Power games can be a huge problem in large companies where line managers are too heavily committed to their own advancement to interest themselves in the juniors beneath them. Tiny empires usually manage to flourish at departmental level, beneath the notice of the policy makers on the top floor.

Baby boomers, as part of an older generation with older values, are unlikely to prescribe to the type of behavior that causes colleagues so much distress and unhappiness, although exceptions should always be considered. Workplace bullying begins at every level from the shop floor right up to the boardroom and baby boomers have the long term career experience to address toxic situations and help to eliminate them.

In conflicts where colleagues are targeting a particular individual, it is so tempting to keep your head below the parapet and pretend you are busy rather than improve someone’s day by stepping in and saying ‘That’s not fair’ or ‘Be reasonable and try this…” Baby boomers by nature are usually the adventurous sort and not afraid to enter the arena. Sometimes, though, everyone has the need for a quiet day and on these occasions, toxic behavior slips the net.

One of the major unpleasant pastimes in large companies is the tendency to gossip. Chatting about a colleague having another baby or making a remark about somebody’s birthday is passing chatter designed to be sociable and interactive: talking about someone’s marriage difficulties or their rumoured love affair with the boss is dangerous, harmful and hurtful gossip.

Baby boomers would be well advised to avoid getting involved with the kid of colleagues who indulge in this kind of entertainment. There is no need to be opinionated or to dictate your own values to such people: just walk away from pockets of gossip. Eventually you will earn the reputation for not indulging in gossip and this can only be a good thing for baby boomers or for any employee.

Sometimes, people who are insecure require their egos to be massaged, especially in the senior management sector. This insecurity can cause all manner of unsociable behavior in the workplace, ranging from simple conceit to the kind of bullying that takes the form of sexual harassment (oh yes, it happens to baby boomers too) or even victimization. Baby boomers are old enough to know better, but those who derive a mean satisfaction from intimidating others should take time out and seek professional therapy followed by a period of rehabilitation before re-entering the workplace.

This Psychological Article on Toxic Workplace Situations for Baby Boomers and How to Eliminate Them is part of Boomer Yearbook’s continuing series of baby boomers psychological coaching tips and how to alleviate elderly problems. We believe knowledge is power. We’d love to hear what you think

Meditation is for the purposes of calming the mind and attaining an internal peace. Meditation is something that is useful in environments of stress and can have surprising benefits varying from simply feeling better in the moment to keeping cholesterol levels down. Many people do not know how to meditate, however, and therefore tend to avoid it.

The following are simple steps you can take to meditate, without getting into the intricacies of the practice:

Step One
Turn off all distractions like the TV, the cell phone, the laptop, etc and sit in a comfortable position. Close your eyes and relax your body, but you need to stay awake and alert so you can really focus on clearing your thoughts. Good posture is very important. A straight back is the best way to achieve this, but if you have trouble sitting straight for an extended period of time, then sit with your back against some support and/or roll a towel and place it behind your lower back. This will encourage you to maintain good posture while meditating.

Step Two
Take a deep breath in and, then, expel it. Tune your ears into the sound of your breathing and try to get to a slow, even rhythm. Concentrate on the movements your body makes during this breathing exercise and take your time to feel the air come into your body and distribute itself all around it and then out of your body. If you have racing thoughts, block them out and concentrate on how your body feels during your breathing exercise.

Step Three
After a few minutes, you should be tuned into your body and as you become more and more conscious of even its smallest movements during breathing. Now return to your natural breathing rhythm, while still concentrating on how your body moves and feels during breathing. There is a sensation that most persons feel at this point that makes them feel ‘in tuned’ with their bodies. If you’ve attained that feeling, then, you are in the perfect mode for deeper meditation. This simply means that you will involve your mind in the process now.

Step Four
Keep the muscles in your body relaxed. If you find yourself twitching or fidgeting, then try to find a more comfortable position where you won’t feel the need to do so. You will now need to focus your mind on one thing. Picture yourself in an empty room with a pile of laundry in it, or whatever works for you. Now picture yourself pushing the pile out of room and shutting the door. That is what you need to do with all the thoughts that are pestering your mind and trying to steal your attention. Some persons use a meadow or a lake. The idea is to think of somewhere where you can relax and be alone, and to imagine yourself there with nothing to think about. When you have done this then stay there and revel in the peace that it brings you.

Meditation can be the place where you slow down and take things easy, something most of us can’t do in our normal lives. The more you meditate, the easier it will be and soon you will find that you will be able to meditate anywhere, anytime.
