Even though no exact formulas for interpreting a dream, many psychological articles affirm common “universal or archetypal” dream symbolism. However, as we’ve stated before,

http://boomeryearbook.com/blog/2009/01/13/how-unique-dreams-and-their-symbolism-can-be/
general guidelines about dream symbolism can never adequately reflect any one person’s individualistic significance represented by a dream figure. For instance, while psychological articles may give a generic interpretation to seeing a black cat in a dream as a symbolic omen of bad luck, it would be absolutely incorrect to make that a universal archetype for “all” dreams. Additionally, while it would be incorrect to collectively interpret that anyone who dreams about a black cat has had some type of bad luck in their past or will have in their future, if the black cat in the particular dream was in some way foreboding or scary, what you can interpret, but with caution and not certainty, is that it is possible the person dreaming about a black cat may be experiencing anxiety or worrying that a particular situation may be doomed for a bad outcome. This would be an even more reasonable interpretation if the dreamer proclaimed to “being superstitious” and fearing black cats, as in this individual’s case, the archetype might indeed “fit” and be meaningful symbolism for the dreamer.

Psychological articles, such as the ones cited in previous Boomer Yearbook dream articles, suggest a few methods to aid in interpreting your own dreams, and report a higher incidence of psychological self awareness in persons who are able to unravel their dream imagery and its significance. For instance, in one psychological article on dream interpretation, Jane Teresa Anderson suggests that you can start by summarizing your dream in just one sentence, or as the famous dream researcher, Galye Delaney suggests, give your dream a one line title. Both authors recommend this one line dream summary as an excellent step in understanding your own dreams; explaining that even if your dream was long and complicated, try summarizing the part that you remember the most, or the most vivid visceral “feeling” you were experiencing in your dream as an aid in finding meaning and interpreting your dream.

After summarizing your dream in a one line sentence or title, psychological articles suggest the next step is to ask yourself how that sentence applies to your waking life. You may find that your dream title, “I had an extreme fear of a black cat crossing my path and bringing bad luck” is representative of your fear of something bad interfering with your relationship and causing a break-up. You may then realize that a relationship rupture or break up has been on your mind and your dream is painting you a vivid picture, in the form of the black cat, as a way for your subconscious to communicate with your conscious mind to alert you to your anxiety. Once you interpret your mind’s “alert signal” as presented in your dream, you are in a much better position to understand how you truly feel about the waking life situation and how you want to deal with it.

The more you practice this technique, the better you will become at utilizing it. Remember it is just one possible technique, but it may be the one that works for you!

At Boomer Yearbook we recommend you keep a dream journal, and record your dreams, or whatever fragments of your dreams that you remember, as soon as you awaken. You will find that with just a little practice, usually a few nights or one week’s time, that you will have better dream recall and greatly improved subjective psychological understanding of your dreams and their significance to your waking life.

Some of us have gone to bed on what seemed like a totally normal night only to dream about someone famous that we don’t even know in waking life. That’s crazy, right? Why would you dream about a celebrity when you know nothing about their lifestyle or true nature? Well, it happens and it happens more often than you might think.

There are several reasons a celebrity might appear in your dreams. Sometimes the person is there to symbolize what you wish you were, want to become, or a lifestyle you would like to attain; (i.e. called a wish fulfillment dream in psychological articles). Many people wish and day dream about being famous or about knowing someone famous. Psychological articles and research suggest we frequently take this desirous wish one step further and have it fulfilled in our nighttime reveries.

Alternately, psychological articles have informed us that the famous person may be there to represent a certain hidden part of your psyche, what the famous psychologist Jung would call the “shadow” aspect of your personality. The conscious mind finds the “shadow” parts unacceptable and thus they seek outlet in the subconscious recesses of your dream imagery. For instance, you might dream about partying with someone that has been in the media a lot lately for too much party behavior; thus having the celebrity represent a shadow component. On the other hand, you might also dream about becoming best friends with a celebrity that you idolize or have always wanted to meet. This type of dream might be simple “wish fulfillment”; your dream is satisfying your desire to either become or befriend someone of celebrity status.

Another psychological theory about celebrity dreams is that a person who dreams about a celebrity is expecting a big turning point in their waking life. Psychological articles, tell us that in this type of dream the celebrity symbolizes the excitement and eagerness of it all. It could be a new relationship or a big move, a new job even–anything that is a major change for the future of the dreamer.

Lastly, a celebrity could represent some “real” person in your waking life; not necessarily even a high A list superstar. The “celebrity character” may in fact be left over “day residue” from a random actor or actress you saw on a television show, and subconsciously reminded you of someone with whom you really do interact. In this case, the psychological articles suggest that the characteristics of the role “the celebrity” plays represents some aspect of your real life acquaintance.

It may seem strange to wake up and remember that the person in your dream was not really the person it was supposed to be. Yet, next time you dream about a famous person, we at Boomer Yearbook want you to know that it is not such a strange thing at all.

Every now and then people report dreams of a baby or a child that they have never seen before. Although it is not as common as some other symbolisms reported in dreams, it does occur. And if someone asks you, you can probably remember the age of the child, maybe even the exact age, even though you claim to have never seen that child before in waking life.

Jane Teresa Anderson wrote a psychological article on her dream site suggesting that in order to find out what the unknown baby or child might represent, begin by asking yourself “how old was the dream child”. However, she stresses not to take a long time answering this simple question but, to go with your gut instinct and give the first answer that comes to mind. According to Anderson, the age of the child represents how long ago in the past something in your life occurred that caused you to dream. She claims that if you try it, you will find it to be an “amazingly accurate indicator”.

Your next step is to ask yourself what was happening to the child in your dream. Was it hurt or lost? Did the child lose something or was the child scared? Once you find out what the child was doing, you can then ask yourself how that applies to your life. Let’s say you identified the child as scared and feeling lost. She was 6 months old. You then realize that six months ago you lost someone you cared deeply about and have been feeling lost without that person.

The preponderance of psychological articles on dream interpretation report that most dreams correlate to real life experiences or emotions. Usually they simply translate the events of the day (i.e., Freud’s Day Residue), into the symbolic imagery experienced as a dream. However, dreams can also be reflective of “unresolved” past life events. Psychological articles tell us that oftentimes, we humans try our best to suppress our conflicted or traumatic emotional responses, not wanting to face or deal with them. One side effect of this emotional denial is to have our dreams be our “alarm signal” (Gayle Delaney), as the dreaming mind will free the reigns of denial and allow or even force us to confront whatever it is that we have been trying to push out of conscious awareness.

Our best advice at Boomer Yearbook is not to fight it. See if you can figure out the root emotional cause of your dreams and what the dream represents to you. You might find yourself more at peace both in your waking and dreaming life.

Some psychological articles say that dreams are the brain’s way of getting rid of useless information that we’ve collected throughout the day; while other psychological articles propound alternate theories. Either way, while, we may not remember our nightly dreams, we do indeed dream. And one very common dream in childhood, and typically less common but nonetheless apparent in adult dreams, is dreams of flying. But while some flying dreams can be intensely pleasurable, other flying dreams can be terrifying.

If you remember any of your dreams of flying, you will also remember that you knew in the dream that you were dreaming. How cool is that? As we’ve discussed in other psychological articles in Boomer Yearbook, (check out our forums on Courtz Dream Web: The Place to Untangle the Meaning of Your Dreams) this kind of dreaming, when you are aware that you’re dreaming, is called lucid dreaming.

Ok, so there are good dreams and bad dreams where flying is concerned. Many psychological articles report that the majority of flying dreams are of the scary, bad kind. One common reason put forward in psychological articles is that the dreamer can’t seem to get a good start, and “loses height” and hits the ground. The psychological articles and research propound that having difficulties staying in flight might be reflective of ones inability to control their circumstances in waking life. Other dreamers may manage to stay in flight but encounter hindrances like trees or mountains. In such cases it might be very beneficial to examine the “blocks” or hindrances in your waking life that are preventing you from moving forward. In other troubling flying dreams, the dreamer realizes that he/she has no control over the flight pattern; which can be really terrifying. When these dreams occur, it will serve the dreamer well to record the dream and try to pinpoint and evaluate what waking life circumstances make you feel like you are “spinning out of control”. Unsuccessful flying can range from being mildly frustrating to full out terrifying. What psychological articles advise is that you keep a “daily residue” (in your dream diary, record a few paragraphs of the day’s events before you go to sleep) and in re-evaluating your dreams, concentrate on how you are responding and dealing with the waking problems you have recorded in the day residue part of your dream diary. Then, do some honest soul searching and revisit how you are (or aren’t) managing problems in your everyday life, paying special attention to block and hindrances that are keeping your from your goals.

Easy and comfortable dream flying can be exhilarating. You’ll feel uplifted and thrilled. You might be on top of your game and that’s what is being mirrored in your dreams. Funnily, the time of day or night in your dream can determine the mood of the dream. Dreams where there are sunny skies and you can see the landscape might bode that you have good perspective on some issues. And then there are dreams of flying wherein you are escaping a situation by elevating yourself above and looking down on the turmoil below; a common escape fantasy type of dream often reported by younger children. And then there are flying dreams that are connected with sex… Ah but that’s for another article.

Sometimes you might not remember the dream itself, but you remember the joy you felt while flying. Sometimes, in truly lucid dreams, you can control the flying and change course because you know you’re dreaming. Interpreting flying dreams isn’t hard, but like all dreams, the meaning is subjective to the individual dreamer; and the dreamer needs to consider whether the dream left them in an emotional state wherein they felt happy or scared, or frustrated. And then there are hundreds of psychological articles that give “universal” ways to interpret some dream phenomena. For example, flying with wings relates you to birds and you probably have clear vision. Flying freely with total control indicates your free spirit. Flying low to the ground, or by peddling or flapping your arms (yes, people sometimes fly like that in their dreams!) may be indicative of your strong resolve and hard working nature. Dreams, while many may not give much weight to them, if remembered and analyzed, can have profound effects on mood and behavior.

At Boomer Yearbook we think dreams can be incredibly useful for self discovery. What do you think?

Dreams are one of the very important psychological issues; as many psychological articles tell us a dream is more than just a random compilation of the unconscious mind. In fact, psychological theorists believe that a dream actually gives us a window of insight into what the unconscious mind is really thinking and believing. Originating with Sigmund Freud, the theorists represented in these psychological articles posit that dreams are a tool to uncovering things that we have repressed or kept hidden from our waking consciousness, and thus these thoughts and feelings become conveyed to us as “alarm signals” through our nighttime reveries. In other words, to these theorists, all dreams represent something of subjective psychological importance; and oftentimes this emotional material is objectionable to the person’s conscious waking ego.

Freud’s dream theories are representative of the psychological (i.e., non random) approach to dream interpretation; as he believed that dreams are the doorway to understanding the unconscious mind. He believed the psyche had three parts: the id, the ego, and the superego. It is a bit of a complicated theory, but basically, Freud believed that dreams occur because of the ego defense theory, which is the waking ego, our conscious minds, defending our more vulnerable subconscious minds from allowing in material the conscious ego would find unpleasant and objectionable. Therefore, if the conscious mind isn’t willing to deal with conflicted or difficult waking issues, the unconscious dreaming mind will push through the conscious ego’s defenses and present the material as dream imagery.

We all need to sleep! This is certainly a well known fact. Lack of sufficient sleep is harmful to both our minds and bodies. However, lots of differing psychological articles have different opinions on the role of dreaming. For Freud, when we sleep the ego part of our mind relaxes and, therefore, the unconscious mind is able to sort of influence our conscious mind. However, he says that if this actually happened it would wake us up, so our mind had to develop a defense against awakening. He explains that the ego begins to do what he called dream work, in which the ego can disguise thought of the unconscious nature by using symbols. In his theory, the symbols do not disturb our sleep and, thus, a dream develops.

Now what does all this mean, you ask? Well, basically, it means that there are two distinct levels of dreams. There is the manifest content, which Freud says is what you remember after you awake or the part that is remembered after the ego disguised it. And then there is the latent content, the true meaning of the dream. To go a step further, Freud thought that the symbolism in dreams were of two types: personal symbolism and universal symbolism. Personal symbolism contains symbols that are relevant to the dreamer while universal symbolism contains symbols that are universally recognized as having the same meanings, (i.e., similar to Jung’s concept of archetypes we discussed in http://boomeryearbook.com/blog/2009/03/04/dream-interpretation-using-title-or-one-line-summary/

What do you think? Do you believe there is any truth behind Freud’s ego defense theory? Or do you believe that each dream is unique to each individual and that there is no such thing as a universal symbol? You will find that the debate rages on. You can generalize a universal symbol as to the possibilities of what they generally represent, but you cannot say for certain that it means the exact same thing to every dreamer.

For further information on Freud’s theory and to read the full article upon which this one was based, you can visit the following website: http://www.psychlotron.org.uk/resources/sleep/AQA_A2_sleep_theoriesofdreaming.pdf, and we hope you can share your thoughts at Boomer Yearbook.

sound therapy information over the internet with the knowledge we’ve acquired throughout the years and psychological articles tell us that sometimes, we find that we have less capacity to learn and/or retain new things. We leave one room to go to another to fetch something and by the time we get to the other room; we’ve completely forgotten what it was we were looking for. Some of us try to brush these episodes off as “senior moments” and blame “old age.” Others of us try to take remedying steps using mechanical reminders from the array of differing available gadgets. But what about re-conditioning our actual brains so we don’t forget in the first place? Psychological articles tell us sound therapy could be the hoped for, long term solution.

Sound therapy involves listening to classical music while utilizing special earphones or headphones as a means to ‘rehabilitate the ear and stimulate the brain’. The music is filtered and specially selected to alternately produce high and low tone sounds in order to exercise the middle ear and stimulate the receptor cells within the inner ear. There is an abundance of psychological articlesaffirming that stimulated receptor cells result in a more sensitive ear that can pick up higher frequencies and then pass these on to the brain. Psychological articles tell us the benefits of Sound Therapy are manifold in that these higher frequencies re-energize the brain resulting in increased vitality, better quality and more restorative sleep, and less mood swings with more constant feelings of ease and relaxation. Below are listed some of the benefits of Sound Therapy, according to the psychological articles of Sound Therapy International (2009) and Holosync Meditation (2009).

Sound therapy is said to have such benefits as:

• Heightened creativity and mental capacity
• Improved concentration and learning ability
• Improved hearing for those who have suffered minimal hearing loss with or age or from industrial deafness
• Increased energy, performance and focus
• Sharper, quicker memory and alertness
• Relief of tinnitus (ringing in the ear)
• Deep sleep ( relief to insomnia)
• Deep relaxation which may result in the relief of anxiety

Sound therapy is not an expensive procedure and actually takes very little time out of your day if any at all. Because the equipment is portable, and the music is played at a low volume it rarely ever disrupts other activities. Psychological articles found that appreciable positive results are obtained if Sound Therapy is listened to with special high frequency headphones or ear phones, (not with speakers), for therapy sessions beginning with 2 to 3 hours per day for the first month and then 1 to 2 hours a day thereafter.

It is said that results will be seen anywhere between 3 weeks and 6 weeks, but the quality of results appear to vary from person to person. Sound therapy may generally reduce fatigue by allowing you to feel more energized throughout the day or allowing you to be alert longer; or it may reduce fatigue and stress over a long term period such as increasing your endurance in the summer if you are more tired during that period because of the longer days.

Psychological articles and research have found that Sound therapy is effective because it causes otherwise dormant neurons, or brain cells, to be stimulated thereby increasing mental capacity. To break it down, noise pollution affects us all on a daily basis. Low frequency sounds produced by the mechanical devices we use everyday –such as fluorescent lighting, cars, computers etc do not stimulate all the neurons that are available to us. Sound therapy administers high tone and low tone sounds that help to wake up dormant neurons causing our brains to work more efficiently because it’s got more neurons in use.

High frequency sounds include the call of a bird, or the rush of water- sounds found in nature. That same refreshing, invigorating yet peaceful feeling you get after a day spent in nature is the same feeling that results from listening to good sound therapy. The music mimics and reproduces the frequency of such sounds thus stimulating your brain and improving its capacity.

Sound therapy information is available over the internet and at some doctor’s offices. You can also find more information about sound therapy at www.soundtherapyinternational.com

As psychological articles tell us, “Life is a mixed bag”; with the good and the bad fluctuating and co-existing. Keeping this adage in mind, psychological research supports that the measure of a man or woman is the ability to make the most of the good moments and try to courageously deal with life’s tough times. However, while sounding good on paper, it is oftentimes difficult to effectively deal with many of life’s hard-hitting experiences, and traumas (emotional and physical) can have detrimental somatic effects, such as physical aches and pains, joint inflammation, infertility, insomnia, lowered immune responses and debilitating anxiety and depressive reactions. Some of the minor illnesses like headaches, and colds, can be helped through adhering to a healthy diet supplemented with vitamins and minerals. And astoundingly the psychological articles have revealed that physical conditions such as pinched nerves or carpal tunnel syndrome have a surprising and delightfully enjoyable remedy; Dancing.

Surprised? Can’t blame you. It is quite astonishing that something so pleasurable can indeed heal such physical maladies that would otherwise require extensive medical treatment. To understand better how dancing can help in curing certain ailments of the mind and the body, we at Boomer Yearbook, the website for baby boomers, have put together some of the possibilities:

1. Dancing requires a certain amount of focus. In order to get the steps right, we have to clear our minds and concentrate on what we are doing. In reviewing the psychological articles on the subject, Boomer Yearbook, website for baby boomers, uncovered that dancing is an excellent way to put the stresses of our daily lives behind us and let our mind go on a vacation.
2. Psychological articles have overwhelming concluded that certain sounds have incredible healing qualities. As we dance, our senses synergistically harmonize the sound of the music with our dance movements; thus allowing our psyche to absorb the healing character of the music. Ah, music can indeed soothe the savage beast.
3. At Boomer Yearbook, the website for the baby boomers, we discovered that psychological articles have confirmed that there are certain physical moves that encourage our brain to create new sensors that connect with the music and help us perform the dance steps. Boomers! Listen up. Dancing to certain music can help make our brains stronger and create a stronger mind body connection. Wow!
4. As reported in psychological articles, regular exercise provides a stimulus to our immune system tweaking our bodies and minds. Most forms of dancing involve some very quick moves and these further increase the health benefits we derive.
5. Boomer Yearbook, social networking website for baby boomers, further discovered that many forms of dance art, such as belly dancing, involves the use of body parts that usually don’t receive much exercise, For example, Belly Dancing is particularly good for the hips, lower back, shoulders and arms.
6. Eastern beliefs have also noted that many forms of dance assist our bodies in tuning up our chakras and making them more balanced.

Interested in learning more? Stay tuned for Boomer Yearbook’s upcoming series on the healing benefits of various dance forms.

Improvements in medicine, science and healthcare have enabled today’s citizens to live a longer healthier life. The elderly want to retain an independent, active lifestyle and society wants to reduce the economic costs associated with the elderly problems of chronic disease and age related disability. The science of aging suggests that these elderly problems can be overcome in a great way by healthy eating.

Though healthy eating is a smart lifestyle choice for all ages it is almost essential to the well being of us aging boomers. As psychological articles explain there are a number of reasons for this, the prime ones being that as our body’s age we experience a weakening of muscle tone and increases in arthritic related conditions and bone loss. A number of basic health tips can promote healthy living and are recommended to young as well as the aging boomers.

Water

As we age, one of the most common elderly problems encountered is the body’s reduced ability to retain water. To avoid dehydration we at Boomer Yearbook, the social network website for baby boomers, recommend that you daily drink 6 glasses of water per 100 pounds of weight.

Energy

Elderly people have a lot less energy than a young person and need to supplement their daily diets with high protein, low fat foods to avoid the elderly problems of low energy levels and muscle wasting.

Carbohydrate and Fiber

Eating foods high in carbohydrates and fibers helps regulate bowel movement and prevents chronic constipation and associated diseases.

Fat

Though not entirely removed from the diet, aging boomers should reduce their processed fat intake and substitute olive oil and omega fats. Alternate cooking techniques can lessen the fat content and help avoid the elderly problems of heart disease, high blood pressure and diabetes.

Iron

As we age, we also exhibit a decrease in the body’s reserves of iron. Aging boomers should not use iron supplements, particularly not menopausal baby boomer women, unless instructed by their doctors to do so, but the aging boomer generation should eat three servings or iron rich food such as liver per week to help strengthen the body.

Zinc

As we age, our bodies lessen in our ability to retain zinc. Therefore, aging boomers should supplement our diets with chicken, liver, and tuna as they provide excellent natural sources of this needed mineral.

Calcium

Since bone density decreases with age, having a source of calcium or a supplement is highly recommended in order to avoid the elderly problems of osteoporosis (especially women) and fractures due to bone weakening.

Vitamin B12

Psychological articles have reported that deficiencies of the vitamin Cobalamin is linked to memory loss, a frequent elderly problem found in 90% of the elderly population! The vitamin is naturally found in mollusks and clams and is also present, though to a lesser degree in liver.

Healthy eating now is a smart choice as caring for oneself in the present, can prevent many future elderly problems.

That’s what we at BoomerYearbook believe. What do you think?
Boomer Yearbook, a free social networking site for the baby boomers or those concerned with the elderly problems of the baby boomers generation, is based on the vision that the baby boomers want to connect and reconnect, but in our own way and on our own terms.

As a clinical psychologist, Dr. Karen Turner provides free psychological articles on baby boomer relevant topics such as dream analysis, coaching, self-help, boomer forums, the latest news on the baby boomers cosmetic enhancements and weekly updates on the baby boomers generations mental and medical wellness.

There is no doubt that every smoker knows how injurious smoking is to themselves as well as those affected by second hand smoke, but to stress the point, we have compiled a short list summarizing the hazardous effects of smoking; for both the active and passive smokers:

• High risk of stroke
• High risk of coronary diseases.
• Lung cancer.
• Cervical cancer.
• Respiratory tract cancer and disorders.
• Childbirth complications.

Most of these diseases are related to elderly problems faced by the baby boomer generation. Non-smokers that are exposed to an environment where smoking is common may develop the following health related issues:

• Respiratory tract infections.
• Sudden infant death syndrome.
• Ear infections.

Some Tips to help you with Quitting:

• The foremost thing you need to plan is what would be a sufficiently distractive alternative activity? You need to identify the times and situations that ask for a smoke and then think of an alternative activity in which you can indulge.

• Some people crave cigarettes most when stressed out- and can opt to take a run or even a short walk around the block. In other cases where desiring a cigarette when drinking coffee or alcohol, one could replace the accustomed beverage with tea or a health drink that won’t trigger the desire for a cigarette.

• Inform all your friends, family and co-workers about your decision to quit smoking, so they can motivate and remind you.

• Set a date for completely quitting, but start slowly by cutting down on your nicotine intake and maximizing the duration between cigarettes.

• Try to clean out anything that smells of smoke especially the ash trays.

• Give yourself an incentive for completing a smoke free week. Reward yourself for success.

• Avoid the company of friends who smoke and are not supportive of your decision to quit smoking.

• Ask your doctor about nicotine patches, gums or sprays as they are not as hazardous as cigarettes.

• Keep hard candies or even straws which can be chewed on.

• Enroll in a smoking cessation program. It helps to meet others from the baby boomer generation and hear stories about their elderly problems related to smoking to which you can relate.

• Try to convince a friend to quit along with you, and compare progress or even make it a competition.

• Exercise is a great way to curb the urge to smoke.

After a person quits smoking, they may experience recovery symptoms which include weight gain due to fluid retention, sore or dry gums and/or tongue, hunger, lethargy, and short-temperedness. Some people also complain of insomnia and a persistent cough. The good news is that these are a sign that your body is healing itself and cleansing the effects of nicotine. Usually the effects of nicotine are completely flushed out of your system within 2 to 3 days.

According to psychological research, 350,000 deaths occur each year due to elderly problems like heart and lung diseases, cancer and stroke. This should be a good enough reason for anyone from the baby boomer generation to quit smoking now.

In recent times, the religion of Islam has come under criticism due to terrorists’ acts being carried out by radical groups. Yet, this is a distortion of the principles of Islam, whose very name stands for Peace. (Islam means peace). Whether it is fair to vilify the Islamic religion because of a few hateful radicals who practice unthinkable acts of destruction, is a topic that Boomer Yearbook will address in an upcoming blog from our series on psychological articles dealing with Types of Discrimination, but for today, Boomer Yearbook’s psychological articles on types of discrimination will be discussing one Islamic practice that has always been condemned; Polygamy as a type of discrimination against women.

Many Christians believe that polygamy is a license for immorality and feminists have rightfully attacked it as humiliating and a violation of women rights. Since we at Boomer Yearbook believe that knowledge is paramount to finding solutions, let’s begin with a few points to help clarify why Islam allows polygamy:

Beginning with psychological articles review of the history of polygamous behavior, it is important to note that it was not initiated by Islam, but finds its roots in biblical Judeo-Christian writings. Prophets such as David, Jacob, Solomon and even Moses had more than one wife. Jesus, of course, can not be a monogamous example as he never married during his life on earth. However, the First Book of the Old Testament states clearly that King Solomon had not only 700 wives but also as many as three hundred concubines (1 Kings 11:3). Again in the 2nd Book (2 Samuel 5:13) King David is revealed as having more than one wife as well as concubines, and The Book of Deuteronomy (Deuteronomy 22:7) speaks of the division of wealth between male children born of different wives.

Thus, Jews living during the time of the New Testament were not prohibited from marrying more than once, and a review of psychological articlesrelating to the practice of polygamy during New Testament times reveals that some Biblical Jews were openly polygamous, and that no one condemned the practice as unacceptable.

However, Saint Augustine represents an example of one early dissenting Christian voice against polygamy in that he took strong exception to the practice and in contradiction to accepted Biblical ways, commended monogamous marital unions advising his followers to refrain from taking more than one wife. Saint Augustine, the renowned Roman Catholic theologian, lived during the 4th century; a time during which Romans and Greeks both outlawed the practice of polygamy. Ah, but there may be a catch to the Roman and Greek’s conception of monogamous bliss in that while polygamy was abolished, keeping mistresses, seeking out the services of prostitutes, (hetero and bi-sexual), and divorce became wide spread acceptable practices. Interestingly, many psychological articles have asked the question as to whether man is truly a monogamous creature and if the insistence on one partner has fueled society’s epidemic philandering and divorce rates?

And then again there is the perspective of Saint Paul, universally described as the founder of Christianity. Saint Paul actually spoke out against getting married as he believed that the world would soon end and there was no time to spend on enjoying married life.

Contrary to what is commonly believed in the West, Islam neither orders nor recommends polygamy, but demonstrates a tolerance towards it in such cases where it may be deemed necessary. And its tolerance is limited in that The Holy Quran states (An-Nisas’ 4:3) that “But if you fear that you cannot be equitable [to them], then marry only one”.

Psychological articles look at Egypt as an example of a country that might need to adopt a polygamous policy. Egypt that has a population of 10 million women who are single with 3 million over the age of 30 and never married, making it easier to understand why 800,000 of them would accept to become “co-wives”? These are women who are educated and from good families but they have no choice. It is unfair to them both physically and psychologically, as they do not want to enter into a physical relationship with a man outside of marriage and neither do they want to destroy a marriage and be the evil other woman. According to statistics 165,000 men have multiple wives whereas the other 11 million men, not given an option, have taken only one wife.

For a wife to say that she would rather have her husband have an extra-marital affair and live in sin so she can be the wronged-one, is simply not a choice Islam offers. Alternately, no woman has an obligation to agree to share her husband with another wife in case it is intolerable. Islamic scholars verify the right of a woman to seek an annulment of her marriage contract on the grounds that she can not allow her husband to take another wife.

Muslim men are allowed to take a second wife only if the first wife gives him permission to do so, and if he is able to give equal treatment to all his wives (expenditure, time, sustenance etc). Any discrimination between wives or their children is strictly prohibited by Islam. Polygamy can be practiced only if a joint approval is given by both the man and the woman. No woman can be forced to marry an already married man. If a woman feels that she can not allow this practice it does not make her a bad Muslim and it is not a pre-requisite to embracing Islam. A woman is even entitled to add it to her prenuptial contract that the husband would not take another wife so long as he was married to her.

Somepsychological articles have suggested the Western belief that polygamy degrades a woman may be short sited and ethnocentric. Despite polygamy being permissible under Islam, it is practiced very rarely with psychological articles and research shows only a practicing 2%. Most Muslim men are wary of it as it is not only financially taxing but also hard to maintain physically and psychologically. Some psychological articles suggest that polygamy is practiced, albeit illegally so, by more Western Christian sects (i.e., think the TV series “Big Love”) than amongst Muslims. And to take the argument against viewing polygamy as a type of discrimination unique to Muslims may be an erroneously skewed picture, as it we consider the Western divorce and remarriage rate, as well as serial, non monogamous dating, it would be imprudent to assess and condemn Islam as a majority polygamous religion.

Dr. Billy Graham, a well-known Christian preacher and Evangelist, has some interesting views on this subject. In psychological articles and sermons he argues that in spite of predominantly Christian Westerners loudly condemning polygamy and proclaiming themselves to be strictly monogamous, the practice of keeping several mistresses is unfortunately quite common. He further states in this regard that Islam is much more honest in allowing men to marry more than once under special conditions but at the same time banning “all clandestine and amorous associations”.
