In recent times, the religion of Islam has come under criticism due to terrorists’ acts being carried out by radical groups. Yet, this is a distortion of the principles of Islam, whose very name stands for Peace. (Islam means peace). Whether it is fair to vilify the Islamic religion because of a few hateful radicals who practice unthinkable acts of destruction, is a topic that Boomer Yearbook will address in an upcoming blog from our series on psychological articles dealing with Types of Discrimination, but for today, Boomer Yearbook’s psychological articles on types of discrimination will be discussing one Islamic practice that has always been condemned; Polygamy as a type of discrimination against women.

Many Christians believe that polygamy is a license for immorality and feminists have rightfully attacked it as humiliating and a violation of women rights. Since we at Boomer Yearbook believe that knowledge is paramount to finding solutions, let’s begin with a few points to help clarify why Islam allows polygamy:

Beginning with psychological articles review of the history of polygamous behavior, it is important to note that it was not initiated by Islam, but finds its roots in biblical Judeo-Christian writings. Prophets such as David, Jacob, Solomon and even Moses had more than one wife. Jesus, of course, can not be a monogamous example as he never married during his life on earth. However, the First Book of the Old Testament states clearly that King Solomon had not only 700 wives but also as many as three hundred concubines (1 Kings 11:3). Again in the 2nd Book (2 Samuel 5:13) King David is revealed as having more than one wife as well as concubines, and The Book of Deuteronomy (Deuteronomy 22:7) speaks of the division of wealth between male children born of different wives.

Thus, Jews living during the time of the New Testament were not prohibited from marrying more than once, and a review of psychological articlesrelating to the practice of polygamy during New Testament times reveals that some Biblical Jews were openly polygamous, and that no one condemned the practice as unacceptable.

However, Saint Augustine represents an example of one early dissenting Christian voice against polygamy in that he took strong exception to the practice and in contradiction to accepted Biblical ways, commended monogamous marital unions advising his followers to refrain from taking more than one wife. Saint Augustine, the renowned Roman Catholic theologian, lived during the 4th century; a time during which Romans and Greeks both outlawed the practice of polygamy. Ah, but there may be a catch to the Roman and Greek’s conception of monogamous bliss in that while polygamy was abolished, keeping mistresses, seeking out the services of prostitutes, (hetero and bi-sexual), and divorce became wide spread acceptable practices. Interestingly, many psychological articles have asked the question as to whether man is truly a monogamous creature and if the insistence on one partner has fueled society’s epidemic philandering and divorce rates?

And then again there is the perspective of Saint Paul, universally described as the founder of Christianity. Saint Paul actually spoke out against getting married as he believed that the world would soon end and there was no time to spend on enjoying married life.

Contrary to what is commonly believed in the West, Islam neither orders nor recommends polygamy, but demonstrates a tolerance towards it in such cases where it may be deemed necessary. And its tolerance is limited in that The Holy Quran states (An-Nisas’ 4:3) that “But if you fear that you cannot be equitable [to them], then marry only one”.

Psychological articles look at Egypt as an example of a country that might need to adopt a polygamous policy. Egypt that has a population of 10 million women who are single with 3 million over the age of 30 and never married, making it easier to understand why 800,000 of them would accept to become “co-wives”? These are women who are educated and from good families but they have no choice. It is unfair to them both physically and psychologically, as they do not want to enter into a physical relationship with a man outside of marriage and neither do they want to destroy a marriage and be the evil other woman. According to statistics 165,000 men have multiple wives whereas the other 11 million men, not given an option, have taken only one wife.

For a wife to say that she would rather have her husband have an extra-marital affair and live in sin so she can be the wronged-one, is simply not a choice Islam offers. Alternately, no woman has an obligation to agree to share her husband with another wife in case it is intolerable. Islamic scholars verify the right of a woman to seek an annulment of her marriage contract on the grounds that she can not allow her husband to take another wife.

Muslim men are allowed to take a second wife only if the first wife gives him permission to do so, and if he is able to give equal treatment to all his wives (expenditure, time, sustenance etc). Any discrimination between wives or their children is strictly prohibited by Islam. Polygamy can be practiced only if a joint approval is given by both the man and the woman. No woman can be forced to marry an already married man. If a woman feels that she can not allow this practice it does not make her a bad Muslim and it is not a pre-requisite to embracing Islam. A woman is even entitled to add it to her prenuptial contract that the husband would not take another wife so long as he was married to her.

Somepsychological articles have suggested the Western belief that polygamy degrades a woman may be short sited and ethnocentric. Despite polygamy being permissible under Islam, it is practiced very rarely with psychological articles and research shows only a practicing 2%. Most Muslim men are wary of it as it is not only financially taxing but also hard to maintain physically and psychologically. Some psychological articles suggest that polygamy is practiced, albeit illegally so, by more Western Christian sects (i.e., think the TV series “Big Love”) than amongst Muslims. And to take the argument against viewing polygamy as a type of discrimination unique to Muslims may be an erroneously skewed picture, as it we consider the Western divorce and remarriage rate, as well as serial, non monogamous dating, it would be imprudent to assess and condemn Islam as a majority polygamous religion.

Dr. Billy Graham, a well-known Christian preacher and Evangelist, has some interesting views on this subject. In psychological articles and sermons he argues that in spite of predominantly Christian Westerners loudly condemning polygamy and proclaiming themselves to be strictly monogamous, the practice of keeping several mistresses is unfortunately quite common. He further states in this regard that Islam is much more honest in allowing men to marry more than once under special conditions but at the same time banning “all clandestine and amorous associations”.

The word meditation frequently brings the image of Buddha to one’s mind. It literally connotes relieving the mind of all thoughts and focusing on one object not only for contemplation but also for spiritual development. It relaxes mind and body and uplifts the soul and psychological articles often tell of people who experience a revelation- oftentimes a philosophical realization or personal truth. At the least, meditation can lead to inner calm, profound peace, contentment, and understanding by encouraging the mind to aim towards some healing element such as a process, a sound, or an object. It involves focusing on the existing moment without letting wandering thoughts and memories crowd the mind.

Meditation is not original to people dealing with the fast pace of the modern world. It dates back to our ancestors and has been promoted by several religions over the centuries such as Buddhism, Christianity, Islam, Judaism and Taoism, primarily because it advocates tolerance and self-awareness, facilitates self-discovery and strives to ensure ever lasting blissful peace. There are different techniques of Mediation. Boomer Yearbook’s psychological article will deal with two: Mindfulness Meditation and Concentration Meditation.

Mindfulness meditation lets the practitioner maintain an open focus encouraging him or her to pay attention to internal feelings, sensations, and inner thoughts. The process involves trying to understand causes and effects in order to reach an extreme level of awareness which consequent peace. To be more exact, the meditation practitioner widens focus instead of narrowing it to one point or object in order to gain serenity and inner calmness.

Concentration meditation, on the other hand, narrows the practitioner’s focus and directs it to one process, for example, breathing in and out or repeating a prayer or mantra without getting distracted. The practitioner blocks out the external distractions of the in order to internally focus and delve deeper into the recesses of the unconscious world of awareness. Concentration meditation is hailed by several religions as it is believed to have deep long lasting spiritual benefits.

Body posture is also very important as far as meditation is concerned. Meditation traditions suggest that the practitioner should sit erect without slouching, with bare feet and legs crossed in the lotus position, and while remaining comfortable, fold the hands with right atop left or stretch arms and keep eyes closed. Modern techniques for meditation involve less formal physical postures, (for the sake of physical relaxation), for instance Walking Meditation allows one to walk step by step and meditate on breathing and movement.

Over the years, numerous psychological articles have observed that meditation has spiritual benefits and also works therapeutically to silence a trouble mind by “feeding the craving thought.” It has been reported to facilitate many physical changes in the body such as changing and improving the human metabolism and positively affecting immune system while reducing stress and pain. It positively affects blood pressure and can even alter negative brain chemistry. It has been used as a clinical tool by medical practitioners to help reduce stress and psychological problems. It relaxes muscular tension and rejuvenates the mind, leaving one with a positive attitude towards life. A relaxed and refreshed mind thinks more productively, hence creates effectively. In short, Meditation, an important part of physical as well as mental health exercises, enhances human capability to create and germinate new ideas.

You know what really drives me crazy? When you’re at an event, a family reunion, as company picnic, whatever, and some guy starts taking pictures of every little insignificant thing. Like me eating corn on the cob. Corn on the cob in one of my favorite foods in the world, but there is nothing beautiful, funny or interesting about me eating it. Yet, every single time I bring that golden sheaf to my lips, lips stretched back, gums all exposed, tiny yellow gunk in between my teeth, someone is taking a picture of it. Or at weddings. People take pictures of the stupidest things at weddings. Remember about 15 years ago, when the big rage was to eschew hiring a professional wedding photographer in favor of littering fling cameras all over the tables so that your closest friends could capture your most intimate, personal, one-of-a-kind memories? An entire generation of people ended up spending money to develop thousands of pictures of crotches and nose hairs, and nothing to remember the most important day of their lives with.

The diehards call it taking “candids”. I call that kind of photography Kamikaze photography. It’s totally meaningless. What do people do with these pictures? Line their liter boxes? Ick.

In 1948, Photographer Philippe Halsman set off to find the defining moment in a photograph. “Dali Atomicus” featured a crazy looking painter, his easel and chair, all jumping in the air while three cats and a bucket full of water flew toward them. You can check it out right here if you’re not familiar with it: http://www.flickr.com/photos/monkeyc/95165918/ . There was obviously no Photoshop during those times, so every single element had to be coordinated perfectly to time with everything else, creating a “defining moment”, where everything comes together into a moment that is like no other. This is what you’re looking for in every picture that you take.

How do you capture the defining moment? The easiest way is to keep shooting after your subjects think you’re done taking the picture. Most of the time when you take a picture, the only thing on your subject’s mind is “Just take the %$#&^&* picture, already.” And that’s what they look like. They are usually talking, pulling at themselves or looking away from the camera. But after you take the picture, people relax, and you get the true life that lurks behind the pose.

This picture of Courtnie and Perrie is a nice, clean shot. The lighting is nice and you can see how strong their sisterly bond is. If that’s all you get, well, ok, that’s great, but immediately after I took that shot, I pretended that I was done, gave them “the nod”, and then ramming speed hefted the camera back up to my eye right away. I took this shot: Ooh, aah. Yes, Courtnie’s eyes are closed, but SO WHAT? This is the shot! This is the moment. There is something special here, and when you get something special, it’s time to celebrate. And when I celebrate, I eat corn on the cob.

They say life begins at forty; while this is also the peak life stress point. Home, career, relationships and even your self are all stress contributors. Some stress, especially when kept under reasonable control is positive and healthy and can help us perform gracefully under pressure. On the other hand, mishandled stress can pose several serious and even life threatening health threats.

Stress is an adrenaline-related response to the various events that we perceive as threats. The nervous system releases hormones that prepare us for fight or flight. Your muscles become tense, the heart starts pounding faster, and your breath starts to quicken. These are some of the physiologic responses to stressful agents.

Chronic stress can disrupt the important organ functions in the body. It may cause sleep disorders, widespread pain, obesity, skin problems, digestive problems and an unsound mind. It can go as far as contributing to heart diseases, lowered immune system responses, early signs of aging, and serious problems related to anxiety and depression. Stress can also exacerbate present health problems. The need for a healthy way of managing stress is imperative to prevent these dreaded diseases before they materialize.

Be aware of the ill-effects of stress. It is very important to realize that mismanaged stress is a silent assassin that can easily cripple a happy and healthy life. Once you have an understanding of the bad effects of stress, it convinces you to exert a conscious effort in controlling these stressors in your life.

Identify your stressors and know how you respond to each. As the saying goes, keep your friends close and your enemies closer; and uncontrolled stress is the enemy. Create a journal that lists the things, people and events that make you feel uncomfortable, and make another list of your responses to various stressors. The goal is to get a clear picture of which stressors you handle well, and which ones are problematic. There’s no such thing as zero stress. Write down even the littlest detail as it can also be a rewarding experience to know that there are stress agents that you can handle smoothly.

Once you have reviewed your list, you may want to concentrate on the ones that you’re having a hard time dealing with. Sort out those situations or people that bring out the monster in you, and follow these simple steps to properly managing them.

Avoid unnecessary stress, and adapt to the ones which cannot be altered. Unnecessary stressors are the ones that can be easily avoided by saying “no”. It just takes the proper heart and attitude to learn to be self protective. Say you know your job skills well, and your boss asks you to do a task you know you can’t handle. Don’t push yourself. Politely decline your employer stating that the project might turn out more successful if another skilled colleague handles it. Adapting to the stressor is a heroic and fulfilling act. Learning to accept and adjusting to the things you can’t change can add more years to your life.

Learn proper time management. It is a wise idea to keep a planner. It gives you an idea of how a busy day in your life goes, and you get to evaluate which events are important, and weed out activities which are stressfully unproductive.

Live a healthy lifestyle. Avoid cigarettes, drugs and alcohol. Engage in regular exercise and a balanced diet. Get enough rest and ample amounts of fluid.

Relax, relax, relax!!! Indulge in periods of refreshing moments with family and friends at least once a week! Doing something you enjoy adds to your sense of well-being. You will build stronger relationships and brighten your life outlook

Okay, there is this little trick, an optical illusion as it is called, known as “The Spinning Girl.” The first thing that may come to your mind when you hear about “The Spinning Girl” is a lurid vision of a scantily-clad pole dancer or the newly-crowned champion on the Polish version of “Dancing with the Stars.” But, no. She is a well-sculptured image of a full-body female silhouette who is spinning around on one foot. What’s the big deal? you might ask. Well, there’s not one. It is an optical illusion, not a cure for cancer or the solution for peace in the Middle East. But she is quite the center of many a conversation. Let’s see just why that is, shall we?

Take a gander at our little animated friend and decide what you see: is she spinning clockwise or counter-clockwise? Can you see her spinning in either direction at will? Or, try as you might, can you not change her direction with your mind’s eye, regardless of whatever direction you see her spinning? There are theories regarding the direction your mind sees in The Spinning Girl’s rotation. Those who see a clockwise rotation are said to be “right brain” folks. Right-brainers are the artsy folks who let their feelings get in the way of good, sound judgment. Those who see a counter-clockwise rotation are “left brainers”. The left-brain group is filled with logical rule followers who just need to let their hair down every once in a while. And what if you can see her spinning in either direction? Are you a math whiz who lives on the edge by daring to use a PEN to factor equations? (Of course, you might even wonder if the blood flows in opposite directions in the different hemispheres when it drains downward.) What has been determined by the naked girl silhouette experts is that the right brainers are spur-of-the-moment adventurous individuals who may not give a hoot about what the rules are, while the left brainers write down the rules in bulleted lists and laminate them for future reference when they are challenged by the right brainers. ‘Just do it’ versus ‘Fail to plan, plan to fail’, you might say.

So what does all this left brain versus right brain psychological jargon tell us? It tells us that we are willing to stare at a fictitious naked lady spinning in midair to figure out what we probably already knew about ourselves. Most of us know if we like jumping out of airplanes or working Sudoku puzzles. But, the appeal of comparing ourselves to others is too tempting to pass up. What do we do with the information we gather from this little experiment anyway? Do what you want to with it. A great suggestion is to seek out other optical illusions and mind games to test yourself further and see if they confirm or refute the results of one another.

For other optical illusions and brain boosters, visit the Games section on boomeryearbook.com. Maybe you can find your opposite brain buddy while discussing which way The Spinning Girl rotates! And if you invite Dr. Karen to be your friend she can teach you the trick of how to make Spinning Girl rotate in any direction. Yes, Virginia, there really is a way to make her turn at will .

The practitioner of a belief is convinced of the truth of his faith, thus an interested observer is robbed of his perspective. Sufism, the mystical strain of Islam, is no stranger to this dilemma. As seen from the periphery, Sufism is the meditational mystical aspect of a World Religion sharing many of its practices with that of other faiths. For the believer of Tassawuf, it is the very essence of reality and the purpose of the message of Islam as conveyed by its Prophet.

Among the many pre-requisites of a Sufi to attain his end of spiritual achievement a saying of Muhammad, the Prophet of Islam, is particularly enlightening:

My servant draws near to Me through nothing I love more than that which I have made obligatory for him. My servant never ceases drawing near to Me through supererogatory works until I love him. Then, when I love him, I am his hearing through which he hears, his sight through which he sees, his hand through which he grasps, and his foot through which he walks.

(cited in:
http://etext.lib.virginia.edu/journals/ssr/issues/volume3/number2/ssr03-02-r03.html;August 2003)

Meditation, purifying oneself of the lower self, and various practices of mystics are the occasion but not the cause of the end of the Sufi. They are stepping stones towards the attainment of Oneness with the Divine.
As all mystical orders, Sufism’s schools of thought endorse and propagate different concepts and ideas, however, certain underlying concepts are shared by all that provide the commonality binding followers of Sufism together.

Dhikr (pronounced Ziker), is one the practices shared by all orders, and consists of repetition of Quranic verses or other religious liturgies. In its broadest sense it can mean any activity that maintains awareness of the Divine. Muraqaba, or meditation, maintains complete non-awareness of all that distracts from concentrating on the idea of the Divine in the Sufi. Sufism, while maintaining the necessity of such means, stresses equally of not more the necessary pre-requisites of attaining perfect character in tune with that of the Prophet as conveyed through the Ages through collections of his sayings, the Hadith. Humility, purity of thought and action, removal of pride, ego, ostentation, arrogance are the markers overcome on the Path or Tariqa reaching different stations or Muqamat towards attaining the ultimate end of the Sufi.

In spite of the theories behind every order, Sufism emphasizes that its knowledge is that to be practiced and experienced, and not be understood in the intellectual sense. For this the guidance of a Teacher is indispensable, who has been transmitted an Ijazah (divine light from the Master to the pupil) through an unbroken chain (silsilah) through the ages. Seen in its simplest form however, Sufism is open to all, but with varying degrees of success and usually failure for most unless expertly guided. Highlighting the confusion of all trying to understand Sufism without practicing it is an extract from the Quran, quoted as explaining the heart-core of the Sufic way:

“Allah is the Light of the heavens and the earth. The similitude of His light is as a niche wherein is a lamp. The lamp is in a glass. The glass is as it were shining star. (This lamp is) kindled from a blessed tree, an olive neither of the East nor of the West, whose oil would almost glow forth (of itself) through no fire touched it. Light upon light, Allah guideth unto His light whom he will. And Allah speaketh to mankind in allegories, for Allah is Knower of all things: (This lamp is found) in houses which Allah hath allowed to be exalted and that His name shall be remembered therein.”

(cited in: 24th chapter of The Holy Quran called Al-Nur meaning Light. http://articlesculture.blogspot.com/2009/02/abdelhamid-zoubir-al-ghazali.html, Feb 15, 2009)

“It’s just the usual back pain, it’ll go away…” These are common words that many baby boomers suffering from fibromyalgia, have been known to utter. It is terribly convenient to just ignore simple pains and body irregularities rather than to make a big fuss about them. Aside from that, with the busy lives we are living, these minor complaints can be easily countered by handy ibuprofens.

But what happens if these minor problems pile up and become a big chunk of burden you have to live with everyday? You don’t really think that this might happen do you? Bad news is, it actually could, and our physicians call it, Fibromyalgia.

Fibromyalgia is considered to be a wide collection of signs and symptoms, called a syndrome, rather than a single disease entity. Its nature is believed to be a long list of pain and abnormal body patterns that progressively worsen. This chronic disease is commonly diagnosed during the baby boomer years, leaving us with a wish that we had attended to our symptoms earlier before the pain became debilitating.

What causes fibromyalgia remains a puzzle; as researchers and doctors try to tie together the tiny jagged pieces to help move closer to fully understanding this painful, life altering condition. The most promising theory to date is called “central sensitization”. It posits that people with fibromyalgia have a lower pain tolerance due to a heightened brain sensitivity to pain signals. Other theories include upper spinal injury, infection, an abnormal autonomic nervous system, and changes in muscle metabolism.

SYMPTOMS and DIAGNOSIS

Symptoms of fibromyalgia are:
Widespread Pain
Chest pains
Generalized Fatigue
Sleep Disturbances
Constipation or Diarrhea
Abdominal Pain and Bloating
Headaches and Facial Pain
Depression
Mood changes
Anxiety
Dizziness
Difficulty Focusing

Getting a doctor to correctly diagnose fibromyalgia can be a long and frustrating process. Because fibromyalgia is a conglomerate of bodily abnormalities, it mimics other diseases and a differential diagnosis has to rule out these other disease possibilities before confirming fibromyalgia. Other similar conditions include: lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, multiple sclerosis, carpal tunnel syndrome, sleep apnea, hypothyroidism, and Sjorgen’s syndrome. The mere fact that fibromyalgia can be mistaken for these other conditions is already quite depressing. This is why we need to prepare a truckload of patience and understanding while working with our physician.

PROGNOSIS and TREATMENT

Sadly there remains a highly debatable prognostic outcome. Some studies show that fibromyalgia can be treated with mild success while others pessimistically suggest a lack of significant patient improvement. A reasonably large collective body of evidence concludes that in long term follow ups, none of the patient subject’s remained pain free; that while there is evidence for long term symptom remission in some patients, most patients will relapse and disease signs and symptoms will appear. Two of the most crippling results of fibromyalgia are the withdrawal from or change of work, and the inability to do basic activities of daily living.

Treatment success is greatly affected by the patient’s predisposition. Since fibromyalgia also affects the mind, a positive outlook from the patient is vital to battle and control the pain. Negative emotions pose a greater risk to having a poorer prognosis. Treatment can be pharmacologic (antidepressants, tramadol, zolpidem, etc.), therapeutic (physical therapy machines and exercises), lifestyle modification and alternative medicine treatment (hypnosis, massage therapy, aromatherapy, etc.).

Lifestyle modification is among the most effective treatment options that can contribute to battling the worsening symptoms of fibromyalgia.
A healthy diet along, restful sleep, stress reduction techniques along with daily exercise and pacing activities, can greatly contribute to the improvement of this condition.

Meditation is for the purposes of calming the mind and attaining an internal peace. Meditation is something that is useful in environments of stress and can have surprising benefits varying from simply feeling better in the moment to keeping cholesterol levels down. Many people do not know how to meditate, however, and therefore tend to avoid it.

The following are simple steps you can take to meditate, without getting into the intricacies of the practice:

Step One
Turn off all distractions like the TV, the cell phone, the laptop, etc and sit in a comfortable position. Close your eyes and relax your body, but you need to stay awake and alert so you can really focus on clearing your thoughts. Good posture is very important. A straight back is the best way to achieve this, but if you have trouble sitting straight for an extended period of time, then sit with your back against some support and/or roll a towel and place it behind your lower back. This will encourage you to maintain good posture while meditating.

Step Two
Take a deep breath in and, then, expel it. Tune your ears into the sound of your breathing and try to get to a slow, even rhythm. Concentrate on the movements your body makes during this breathing exercise and take your time to feel the air come into your body and distribute itself all around it and then out of your body. If you have racing thoughts, block them out and concentrate on how your body feels during your breathing exercise.

Step Three
After a few minutes, you should be tuned into your body and as you become more and more conscious of even its smallest movements during breathing. Now return to your natural breathing rhythm, while still concentrating on how your body moves and feels during breathing. There is a sensation that most persons feel at this point that makes them feel ‘in tuned’ with their bodies. If you’ve attained that feeling, then, you are in the perfect mode for deeper meditation. This simply means that you will involve your mind in the process now.

Step Four
Keep the muscles in your body relaxed. If you find yourself twitching or fidgeting, then try to find a more comfortable position where you won’t feel the need to do so. You will now need to focus your mind on one thing. Picture yourself in an empty room with a pile of laundry in it, or whatever works for you. Now picture yourself pushing the pile out of room and shutting the door. That is what you need to do with all the thoughts that are pestering your mind and trying to steal your attention. Some persons use a meadow or a lake. The idea is to think of somewhere where you can relax and be alone, and to imagine yourself there with nothing to think about. When you have done this then stay there and revel in the peace that it brings you.

Meditation can be the place where you slow down and take things easy, something most of us can’t do in our normal lives. The more you meditate, the easier it will be and soon you will find that you will be able to meditate anywhere, anytime. It’s a handy tool to keep your sanity in the ever-changing, helter-skelter world we live in.
